Anholt Nation Brands Index: “Brand Canada ” valued at 1.1 trillion dollars in survey
 
 
A recent survey Anholt Nation Brands Index (NBI), by nation branding expert Simon Anholt, in collaboration with Global Market Insite, Inc.( GMI), a global market intelligence solutions provider, revealed that “Brand Canada” is viewed as the most welcoming and hospitable place on the earth. The survey conducted on 25,709 consumers gauged their perceptions across six areas of national competence: Investment and Immigration, Exports, Culture and Heritage, People, Governance and Tourism of 35 countries.
 
 
The NBI is the first analytical ranking of the world's nation brands. In the fourth edition of the NBI, Canada was ranked 3rd overall, beating 32 countries. However, Canada came first in the Investment, Tourism, and People categories, but ranked only 14th in culture, which was its lowest score. The results show that for the first time, Canada gave itself first place for governance beating its neighbor U.S.
 
     
 
For the first time ever, the latest NBI puts a dollar value on each nation brand, with Canada coming in 8th place with a value of USD 1.1 trillion dollars. The U.S. holds the No. 1 spot with a brand value of USD $18 trillion. The financial valuation of the brands was performed using the 'royalty relief' approach, which assumes a country does not own its own brand and calculates how much it would need to pay to license it from a third party. The present value of that stream of (hypothetical) brand contribution payments represents the value of the brand.

A study by the Manpower Inc., an employment firm, has found that 66 per cent of Canadian employers are having a hard time in finding skilled and talented workers compared with 40 per cent worldwide

 
 

The study was conducted on nearly 33,000 companies in 23 countries which included 1,000 companies from Canada. The study revealed that the areas in which the companies are facing a problem are, in order, sales representatives, customer service representatives, engineers, drivers, mechanics, laborers, chefs, electricians, skilled traders and nurses.

 
 

The survey found the shortage of skilled workers most rampant in Mexico, Canada and Japan whereas, the situation remains exactly opposite in India.

A project to revamp small districts to attract immigrants and to suite their needs of employment and housing.

A district in Canada , Rainy River Dist., is undertaking a project, The Rainy River Future Development Corp (RRFDC), to study the immigration in the district and thereby make changes to attract more immigrants to the area. The RRFDC is a three-step project which took off in December. The genesis of this scheme was during a conversation with local economic development Officer Geoff Gillon.
   
Canada’s urban centres such as Canada, Montreal and Vancouver are fast developing but, with its development the plethora of problems the urban cities face are also on an increase in terms of having enough housing and schooling to accommodate these new Canadians, remarked Jessie Zhang, the RRFDC’s economic development intern. “We think this is our opportunity to attract some of them here,” she added.

The first part of the project involved research over what other provinces are doing for the immigrants such as recruiting immigrants. Former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray, for instance has made use of the provincial nominee program, which lowers the immigration requirements for skilled workers. “ Manitoba uses this program very effectively,” Zhang remarked.

The second part of the project consists of a survey, on the experience of local immigrants in Canada . The questionnaire would include questions focusing on their needs and expectations. “The purpose is to establish a profile of immigrants in this area,” Zhang explained. She is currently working on this stage and it is supposed to be completed by the end of the month by which time she can put together a report on the results.

The third and final stage, which likely will begin immediately after the completion of the second stage, will involve talking to immigration organizations from various communities across the country to find out “how they work with these people, how they recruit and retain them,” Zhang said.

In the last few years, the city has reported a reversal in the decline in property values and the creation of new jobs. “A lot of small towns in Northern Ontario are starting to look at immigration,” Zhang said. “It’s good to start early, to get ready. Here it’s a perfect environment”, she added.

Though the completion of the project is believed to take few months, Zhang said she has got ideas as to where to begin in recruiting immigrants.

here is a visible change in the recent immigration trends, immigrants were first coming in from Europe or the States, which is quite different now as recent immigrants tend to come from developing countries such as India .

“Immigrants bring connections. They can bring information and business opportunities,” she stressed.
